Why Preventing the First Ulcer Is So Critical

Many people only learn how serious neuropathy can be after they develop a foot wound that doesn’t heal. In the worst cases, this can lead to infection, hospitalization, and even amputation especially in people with diabetes and poor circulation.
At the Neuropathy Relief Center of Miami, we work with patients from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Miami-Dade, Broward, the Florida Keys, and from Florida, the USA, Central and South America, and the Caribbean who want to avoid that first ulcer or prevent another one.
Why Neuropathy and Foot Wounds Go Hand in Hand
Neuropathy increases the risk of foot wounds because:
- Numbness means you may not feel a blister, cut, or pressure point.
- Poor circulation slows healing.
- Changes in foot shape or gait create new pressure areas.
- Dry, fragile skin cracks more easily.
A small problem like a new shoe rubbing the wrong spot can become a serious wound before you notice it.
Warning Signs Your Feet Are at Higher Risk
Your feet may be at higher risk if you:
- Have diabetes, prediabetes, or vascular disease
- Already have numbness or loss of protective sensation
- Have a history of foot ulcers, infections, or amputations
- Notice calluses, color changes, or deformities in your feet
- Smoke or have other conditions that reduce blood flow
Patients who travel from Latin America or the Caribbean sometimes arrive with longstanding wounds that never received full specialized care at home.
Daily Foot Protection Checklist
Protecting your feet doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does have to be consistent:
- 👀 Check your feet daily tops, bottoms, and between the toes. Use a mirror or ask for help if needed.
- 🧼 Wash and dry carefully, especially between the toes.
- 🧴 Moisturize dry skin (not between the toes) to avoid cracking.
- 👟 Wear supportive shoes that fit well never walk barefoot, even at home or on the beach.
- 🧦 Choose seamless, moisture wicking socks.
- ✂️ Trim nails carefully or have them done professionally if you can’t see or reach safely.
If you see a new sore, blister, crack, or area of redness that doesn’t improve, get it checked right away.
How the Dr. Alfonso Neuropathy Treatment Protocol Helps Protect Your Feet
At the Neuropathy Relief Center of Miami, the Dr. Alfonso Neuropathy Treatment Protocol is designed to help protect your feet by:
- 🩸 Improving microcirculation so tissues and nerves receive more oxygen and nutrients
- ⚡ Supporting nerve repair and function, which can restore some protective sensation
- 🌿 Reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, which slow healing
- 🧠 Supporting metabolic balance, especially blood sugar, which is critical for wound prevention and healing
When nerves function better and circulation improves, patients are more likely to:
- Notice problems earlier
- Heal faster
- Maintain safer walking and activity levels
We still encourage you to work closely with wound care specialists or podiatrists when needed again, this is a team approach.
Traveling to Miami for Neuropathy and Foot Protection
Many patients from Central and South America and the Caribbean visit Miami both for general medical care and for specialized neuropathy services. If you’re traveling for care:
- Bring records or photos of previous wounds if possible.
- Schedule enough time for evaluation and a plan, not just a quick visit.
- Ask about footwear and skin care recommendations tailored to your daily environment back home (tropical, coastal, urban, rural, etc.).
Our goal is to help you protect your feet long after you leave the clinic.
The Best Amputation Is the One That Never Has to Happen
Every step you take to protect your feet checking them, treating neuropathy, controlling blood sugar, choosing the right shoes reduces your future risk.
