Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathy: When Cancer Treatment Hurts Your Nerves

Hope for Nerve Symptoms After Chemo

Surviving cancer is a huge victory but for many people, the journey doesn’t end when chemotherapy stops. Months or even years later, you may still be dealing with:

  • Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet.
  • Burning or electric sensations.
  • Trouble with buttons, zippers, or fine hand movements.
  • Balance problems or frequent stumbling.

This is often called chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). At the Neuropathy Relief Center of Miami, we work with survivors from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Miami-Dade, Broward, the Florida Keys, Florida and the USA, Central and South America, and the Caribbean who are grateful to be alive but frustrated by lingering nerve damage.

How Chemotherapy Can Affect Your Nerves

Many chemotherapy drugs are designed to attack rapidly dividing cells. Unfortunately, they can also:

  • Injure the small and large nerve fibers in the feet and hands.
  • Disrupt the protective coatings and communication pathways nerves use.
  • Trigger inflammation and oxidative stress in nerve tissue.

Some factors that can increase risk include:

  • Higher cumulative doses of certain chemo drugs.
  • Pre-existing diabetes or neuropathy.
  • Nutritional deficiencies.
  • Concurrent radiation or other treatments.

Common Symptoms of Chemo-Induced Neuropathy

CIPN often shows up as:

  • Numbness, tingling, or “pins and needles” in the hands and feet.
  • Burning pain or unusual sensitivity to touch or temperature.
  • Electric shock–like zaps.
  • Difficulty with fine motor tasks (writing, typing, buttoning).
  • Balance issues and increased fall risk.

For people who’ve finished cancer treatment, it can feel like a new, unwanted side effect that never clocks out.

Why CIPN Is Often Undertreated

During active cancer treatment, the focus is understandably on:

  • Shrinking tumors.
  • Controlling the disease.
  • Managing acute side effects.

After treatment:

  • Follow-up visits may be brief and focused on scans and labs.
  • Patients may be told, “It may improve with time there’s not much else we can do”.
  • Options often center on pain medications, which may help but don’t address nerve repair directly

Many survivors are left feeling like they just have to live with it.

How the Dr. Alfonso Neuropathy Treatment Protocol Supports Cancer Survivors

At the Neuropathy Relief Center of Miami, we respect the complexity of cancer care and coordinate with your oncology team as needed. The Dr. Alfonso Neuropathy Treatment Protocol is designed to:

  • 🩸 Improve microcirculation to damaged nerves, helping deliver oxygen and nutrients.
  • Support nerve repair and healthier communication, which may reduce numbness and abnormal signals.
  • 🌿 Lower inflammation and oxidative stress, which are major players in chemo-related nerve damage.
  • 🧠 Support metabolic and nutritional balance, including key vitamins and blood sugar regulation.

Our goal is not to interfere with your cancer treatment, but to help your nerves recover afterward as much as possible.

What Improvement Can Look Like

Every case is different, but many cancer survivors report:

  • Less intense burning or tingling.
  • Greater comfort walking and standing.
  • Improved ability to use hands for everyday tasks.
  • Better balance and confidence moving around.
  • A sense of getting more of their “old life” back.

Even partial improvements can have a big impact on daily quality of life.

Special Considerations for International Patients

Patients from Central and South America and the Caribbean sometimes:

  • Had treatment in their home country but limited access to neuropathy-focused care.
  • Combine a follow-up trip to Miami for scans or second opinions with a visit to our clinic.
  • Need a clear, written plan they can continue using with providers back home.

We provide bilingual care and work to create a plan that makes sense for your realities once you return home.
